Challenge: The Short Affair

-Prompt Word #2 – Yield

-Prompt Colour – Blue

Author: mrua7

Title: Back to the drawing board

Word Count: Approximately 440

It was late into the night that Illya Kuryakin puttered around in the labs down in the belly of UNCLE headquarters in New York City.

There were beakers and vials lined up along the workbench, each one containing a liquid in varying shades of blue. He had a pipette in his hand and from it he put a single drop of a clear liquid in each one.

Waiting for a reaction; he grabbed his clipboard and prepared to write down the results.

One by one each container of liquid turned yellow until only one was left unchanged.

“Finally,” he mumbled. He was happy with his success, but tired that it taken so long to happen.

Once approved, he could begin to replicate the formula, and if his calculations were right...and they usually were, then he estimated the yield from this first batch to be enough for each field agent to carry a small vial of the antidote with them.

Still he needed to double check his findings to be sure, and there was that little matter of the side effect. Time to do some tests.

An hour later he looked to the subjects and shook his head.

Illya pulled his communicator, calling Mr. Waverly.

“Yes Mr. Kuryakin?”

“Good news sir. I have succeeded with the formula.”

“Bravo, excellent. Every agent in the field will benefit by your perseverance in finding the right mix.”

“It was but a matter of time sir before I found the correct combination. Now when an agent is hit with a sleep dart, if he is able to swallow this formula, the enemy drug will have zero effect.”

“Is there anything else I need to know about it young man?”

“Well, there is a side effect.”

“Oh?” Waverly didn’t like hearing that.

“After taking it the agent will have a rather massive headache and feel as though he is hungover.”

“Is it severe enough to debilitate?”

“It depends upon the person’s pain threshold.”

“Hmmm, perhaps you need to work on it a bit more before we issue it to my field agents.”

“Yes sir, my thoughts exactly.” Illya turned to the half dozen volunteers who were lying on the floor, each curled up in a ball as they quietly moaned.

Though he had residuals from testing it on himself, Kuryakin hadn’t ended up like the other subjects. The question that begged asking, did he have a higher than average pain threshold, or were theirs lower?

“Oh well,” he began passing out aspirins to the test subjects.”Back to the drawing board.”

Oh, this was fun. I do like Illya doing science.
