Prompts:  Brew, Purple
Word Count: 654

This is truly a Short Affair, and the ending may seem open for more.  I am undecided.

…………………………………………..

The aroma of coffee was pungent, a reminder of a new day dawning beneath a sky filled with orange and purple hues that exhilarated the senses with its brilliance.

"What do you have there?  It doesn't smell burnt or like it's made from shoe leather."  Napoleon loved his morning coffee, and sometimes the idea that his partner, his tea drinking partner, was in charge of the morning brew caused a concern common only to those whose first cup was a gateway to the day ahead.

"I assure you that I am well acquainted with the finer points of coffee preparation.  Your friend the Countess…' A blond eyebrow rose slightly in an amused expression from Illya, the memory of the very curvaceous young woman's crush on his partner had provided a minimal amount of entertainment during their stay in her country.

"That is to say, her butler gave me ample supplies of their best coffee.  She had taken note of your, um… appreciation of it."  Now it was Napoleon who smiled.  The Countess was an attractive woman, if not the glamour girl often associated with the UNCLE CEA.  She was a kind person, pretty without being overdone.  She wasn't svelte, something that prompted Illya to consider her, in his words, cushy.  It was a strange word from a man like Kuryakin, but it suited her nonetheless.  She was a comfortable person with whom to spend an enjoyable day or evening, and if she more closely resembled Marily Monroe rather than Audrey Hepburn, well… he had no complaints.  They each had merit; quite a lot of merit as far as Solo was concerned.

Back to the coffee.  They were on a backpacking journey into the mountains above the little kingdom where Countess Sophia was next in line for the throne.  It was a seemingly insignificant spot on the map, but for some reason THRUSH were attracted to it and had made it important, therefore, to the Command.  Alexander Waverly knew the old king, and had observed through the years as the line of ascension dwindled until it was left to this young woman.  He had great hopes in her ability to gather together a good collection of advisors and perhaps enter the world stage as an ally and participant within UNCLE's global network.

THRUSH had found something enticing within the borders of Alvinia.  When the Countess Sophia discovered one of her stewards communicating with an unknown, foreign element, she called on Waverly and asked for help.  He sent his top men, something Sophia would come to appreciate in more ways than she could have imagined.

"I do hope that your Countess can hold onto her resolve concerning this new development."  Napoleon scrunched up his nose, an unconscious gesture in response to Illya's phrasing.

"She is not my countess, and I do believe she can do what we've asked of her.  She will meet with Orville DuBarrie, and keep him occupied until we can retrieve the weapon he has hidden up here… up there."  Napoleon looked up at that, following his own words up the mountain towards a hidden THRUSH installation built without the permission of the Alvinian government.  They had to connect DuBarrie to the weapon, the weapon to THRUSH…

"All in a day's work eh?  And then what?  Dinner with the Countess?"  Illya wouldn't let it rest, and as he handed his friend a cup of her special blend coffee, Napoleon decided dinner with Sophia might just be what he wanted; he had no doubt it was what she was hoping for.

"Just let's get that weapon rounded up and contact the Royal Guard to pick up DuBarrie before he can get out of the country."   And so they did, but not until the last drop of coffee was drunk.  The robust flavor reminded Napoleon of the young woman who was counting on him to save her country.  He would not disappoint.
