I know this is contentious but in Ukraine there are definitely two 'l's in Illya. As opposed to the Russian one occupying second place.

Forgive me if this has been discussed to death but I'm new around here and I've always thought that two 'l's is correct.

Also, I'm confined to my apartment for two weeks and may become increasingly crazy.....

I can't speak for anyone else, but I never heard that two "L"s was correct anywhere.
I heard it had been misspelt by the writers and gradually noticed the Russian single-L spelling here and there and figured that the double-L was indeed not the "correct" spelling.

So thanks very much for the post. It's definitely news to me.

Why are you stuck in your apartment for so long? Is it Sandy-related? Hope you can channel some would-be crazy into some more mfu posts.

I guess the first time I checked it out was when I noticed somebody saying that two l's was incorrect (I hadn't really thought about it), so I looked it up in Ukrainian: Ілля

I know he's not definitely Ukrainian but we do know he spent time in Kiev as a boy so it seems a reasonable (if not inevitably correct) assumption.

I'm stuck in my apartment because I am getting over a minor operation and can't go back to work till next Wednesday. Not a huge problem, that, but it's odd not being able to just pop out somewhere. The last time was exactly four years ago when I had chicken pox and was quarantined for three weeks. I know when it was because the US elections were on that time too!

Hopefully I will get some writing or vid making done...

Let's not forget that parents can think themselves clever with alternative/foreign spellings. I don't know how common that would have been in Russia in the 30's--I'm thinking nothing like now in the US. Still, I had such a parent in the late 70s. And I can tell you, it's really a pain in the ass to have a name people don't understand without a few repetitions and never know how to spell. Oh, to have been a Jane...

I hope you are recovering well. Boredom is a sure sign of successful recovery.

I don't know about random spellings but they made a load of names up:

Marksena (Marx and Engels), Vladlen (Vladimir Lenin), Engelina, Ninel, Marlen, Vi, Melor. Not sure I'd be so happy with some of those. Like you say, you'd have to keep explaining. Especially the last one. "No, it's M.E.L.O.R, for Marx, Engels, Lenin, October Revolution"!!!!!!

And I am recovering well, thanks. I am a bit of a hermit anyway so it's not a huge chore.

Perhaps he could have been partly Ukrainian, anyway? I believe in those days if you had one Russian parent you could claim Russian nationality, which was advantageous.

In my own little IK world his dad is Russian (since Kuryakin is more of a Russian name) and his mum is Ukrainian (since Illya has two l's!).

And I'd decided he would probably have 'Russian' as a nationality, partly for the reason you stated - although it certainly wasn't an advantage in Kiev between 1941 and 1943.

I don't know why it has bothered me so much. I even tried to post to an mfu FAQ page once where everybody was saying it 'had' to be one 'l'. It didn't accept my post.

I presume that the person who originally typed out the name happened to have seen it spelled that way. It might well have been a 'mistake' and just a happy coincidence that somebody mentioned Kiev later. I highly doubt they were trying to tie up lose ends!

I'm greatly relieved to know that no great injustice has been perpetrated by spelling Illya this way. It does put a crimp in the stories that have him apologizing for the misspelling, however, but they aren't numerous. whew!
I hope your recovery goes well, and that you continue to ferret out these important bits of trivia upon which we, as a community, stand ready to receive.

It was the first time I ever found anybody else who had 'evidence' for the two l's. And it turned out to be you. lol

It took me forever to work out it was you though. I do find tumblr confusing because people seem to have so many names!

Oh yes, I make a habit of collecting pseudonyms. It makes it easier to use my real name in some corners of the internet. (facebook). I also find it amusing.

There are two ways to have good internet security: one is to have high level software to protect everything you have, and worry about everything you do. The other is to divert attention elsewhere and just bore the people trying to find you too mich for them to care. So I have a facebook account with most things locked: people will assume there is something worth hiding there. Then I have a primary pseudonym where almost nothing is locked... And almost all I say or do there is harmless and normal, with just enough that is otherwise to be acceptible as everything. The rest of the pseudonyms can be whatever I want them to be.

If I ever want to hide something that I write, I will be totally able to do so. Now to think up something worth hiding......

I've done the same thing on FB. And actually my pseudonym account is much older. I only started one with my real name to see if anyone was looking for me. I try to guard my Lj names too.
