I started importing the comms yesterday, and while Section VII has finished except for what came after the request, the Map Room is still in the queue awaiting completion.  This is a slow process at times, especially when we have so many entries to catch up to.
My goal is to still post on LJ and here, giving people the option to still utilize LJ if they wish.  Many people have indicated they will no longer post entire entries but will utilize links to outside venues, such as AO3 or ff.net.  I think that's a good idea and saves having to re-post at a later date.
We will figure this out.  Perhaps there is no great menace attempting to squeeze the life and the fun out of what we do.  Then again, maybe they just want to get rid of people who won't fit into their particular  profile of safe, non-threatening ideas; if you flee from it then you aren't needed. The Cold War is not that distant, and Putin is a facilitator for a return to that mode of operation.  I feel no need to placate his intentions or whatever end goal he has in mind.
The American contingent will take some heat for being the first to exit, most probably.  If we are viewed with a jaundiced eye regarding our own reflection then so be it.  In the long run we have an inherent need to rise above being just a member of a crowd, to let others walk over our freedom and right to expression, speech and even the occasional protest.  We have an inheritance of a shared history, whether immigrant or Daughters of the American Revolution; we are here because we didn't like being told what to do by a tyrannical ruler or oppressive regime. Contrary to what the world may think or see, that attitude still persists, and it eventually overcomes whatever else is obstructing our view.
Having said that, we won't be the only ones objecting to the wording in the new LJ User Agreement.  But so far it seems, we are the most vocal and the first to jump ship.  Is LJ sinking?  Maybe.  Is it good to have another plot of ground on which to settle and raise the standard of our convictions?  I think so.
I didn't start out to create an American Version of things, but I've read a few comments and seen a little backlash to what is being looked at as unnecessary flailing and complaining.  This isn't an American issue, it's a matter of whether or not you're willing to risk what has been an investment of years by staying under a flagship that is owned and operated by an entity openly hostile to most of the world.  If others have naively done business with them on our shores, it is not without a coming altercation with the American people.  But we're not talking politics here, we're talking our right, as creators, to a safe environment that doesn't state openly that they will, on a whim, take our work and use it for other purposes, anonymously, and without our consent.
Is it just business as usual?
Maybe it is, and maybe we're right to be concerned.  No pressure, no condemnation.  Do what seems right to you.  Some of us already have.

Hm. I wonder if I did something wrong - Dreamwidth said my LJ doesn't exist - it wouldn't import it.

I'm sure it's something I did. :-) It usually is.
