The day after the election Illya found his partner looking over the newspaper.assam_election_results

"What are you doing Napoleon?"

"Studying the election results."

"Wait, first you study, then you vote, than you study who was elected."

"That's it."

"Why the decisions have been made?"

"True but those who are now going to be in power will make changes. I'd like to see what those changes might be."

"But you can do nothing about them, can you?"

"We can let them know how we'd like them to vote on issues."

"I do not understand."

"Freedom, the people we elect speak for us."

“If it’s all right with you I’m going to take a rain check on dinner.”

Illya cocked his head to one side, the meaning of Napoleon’s sentence a mysterious code to the Russian agent.

Napoleon recognized the confusion on his partner’s face.  It was a familiar expression these days.

“A rain check is a … a … it means we can do it later.”

Blue eyes showed none of the strain of trying to decipher American colloquialisms, but the intensity of the man was evident.

“Ah, a delay.  In that case, I need a rain check on typing your reports.”

“Congratulate me, Illya, I picked a winner!” Napoleon beamed as they watched the election results later that night.

Illya listened with acute interest as the losing candidate conceded defeat.  He nodded as Napoleon explained, “The concession speech is the second most important moment of the election process.  It legitimizes the winner’s victory and informs the loser’s supporters that it is time to give up the fight and come back together as a unified nation.  Our government would fail and fall apart if the loser did not support the President – Elect.”

“This really is an amazing country,” the Russian said.

“Indeed.”

For many years I hid it from him successfully—

There are so many words I leave unspoken, so many truths about myself, hidden. He is my friend, and I trust him with my life but why can I not trust him with my secrets.

“What do I fear, my partners pity?” Illya asked as Napoleon appeared, smiling at him.

to liven up the airless with one nose

“Leave it to a fistfight between those two to settle things,” Mark said.

“I’ve never seen them this angry and over a sofa filled with diamonds?” April declared. “Can you imagine arguing over that?”

“Illya forgot to search it and Napoleon caught trouble for it.”

“Hey things happen.” April smiled.

for which I flush with gratitude; yet away

“I’ve lost count how many times you’ve done this.” Napoleon said, looking at his partner after a bullet had been removed from his shoulder.

“It is my job to protect my partner, ” Illya groused.

“No it’s not.”

“You will not convince me otherwise. Now where is my chocolate ice cream?”
