Thanks spikesgirl, for beta-ing for me.

November, 1960......

Different Worlds

Immediately his shift had been over, Illya had headed for the agents’ common room. Since then he had been glued to the television.

Over the past few months he had become increasingly interested in the election campaign. He’d watched often at work and had even contemplated buying a television, but had dismissed that thought as excessively frivolous. Instead he had listened to his radio.

This was, in fact, the first place he’d been made aware of what was going on. He had initially thought that Sinatra’s ‘High Hopes’ was playing until he’d listened more carefully to the words. Something about a man named Kennedy and ‘the opposition’ going ‘ker-plop’. He’d paid more attention than usual to the piece broadcast immediately afterwards. Apparently this Kennedy was in a race with another man called Hubert Humphrey, and he had a song, too.

“Congratulate me, Illya, I picked a winner!” Napoleon beamed as they watched the election results later that night.

Illya listened with acute interest as the losing candidate conceded defeat.  He nodded as Napoleon explained, “The concession speech is the second most important moment of the election process.  It legitimizes the winner’s victory and informs the loser’s supporters that it is time to give up the fight and come back together as a unified nation.  Our government would fail and fall apart if the loser did not support the President – Elect.”

“This really is an amazing country,” the Russian said.

“Indeed.”

The day after the election Illya found his partner looking over the newspaper.assam_election_results

"What are you doing Napoleon?"

"Studying the election results."

"Wait, first you study, then you vote, than you study who was elected."

"That's it."

"Why the decisions have been made?"

"True but those who are now going to be in power will make changes. I'd like to see what those changes might be."

"But you can do nothing about them, can you?"

"We can let them know how we'd like them to vote on issues."

"I do not understand."

"Freedom, the people we elect speak for us."

“What are you doing Napoleon?”

“Studying the candidates running for election.”

“Don’t you find this change in government every four years confusion and irritating at times?”

“Irrigating?”

“The constant ads on TV and the radio.”

“No.  I find them informative.  Besides these men and women will decide the future of my country.  It’s important I vote correctly.”

“Do all people do this?”ShowImage

“What?”

“Research who is running for office.”

“Unfortunately many people don’t even vote.”

“Do they not care who makes their decisions?”

“Afraid not.”

“Perhaps if they saw how it is without the freedom.”

Then it would be too late for freedom.”

“Illya, come with me.  I have something to do before lunch.”

“I am hungry, Napoleon, can it not wait until after?”

“No.”  He started walking briskly knowing the Russian would follow.  Fifteen minutes later, they walked into an elementary school.  Napoleon signed in, showed his ID and motioned for Illya to enter the voting booth with him.

As Napoleon made his choices and flipped the lever, Illya said, “This is the most amazing thing about America: You choose your leadership.  Why are there so few people voting?  I do not understand how people ignore their civic duty.”

“Neither do I.”

Please use the HODOWE and GUY FAWKES and/or ELECTION DAY tags to make your stories easily findable. Also, as a courtesy, remember to post the bulk of your story under a cut.

This is the last HODOWE writing challenge for the year, and next year we will be sponsoring the QUOTEME challenge instead. First of the QUOTEME challenges in 2013 will be in February. Guidelines for that will be posted as the posting timeframe draws closer.

Though the HODOWE: United Nations Day Challenge continues through Saturday, October 27th, I want to post the guidelines for the next HODOWE challenge to give folks as much time as possible for writing. Especially since this one is our last HODOWE challenge for the year, and next year we will be sponsoring the QUOTEME challenge instead.

So anywho, here are the guidelines for the HODOWE: Guy Fawkes/Election Day combo challenge

CHALLENGE: Write an MFU fanfic story regarding the ideas embodied in either Guy Fawkes Day or Election Day or both. The story doesn't have to necessarily mention or include the day(s) by name; just embody a scenario that fits the concept behind it/them. General ideas here: (1) conspiracies, both discovered and undiscovered; (2) deliverance in terms of being saved from some overwhelming wrong or disaster; (3) political demonstrations of one kind or another; and (4) making any sort of political statement, whether publicly or privately.

STATISTICAL STUFF: Minimum of 500 words with no set maximum. Must fit into the overall concepts of this community, i.e., contain no explicit adult material and reflect the 1960s series in style and content.

POSTING: To this forum (and on fanfiction dot net), starting on November 4th and ending on November 10th November 17th.
