This chapter is dedicated to the memory of Svetlanacat who always had an encouraging word. The MFU fandom won't be the same without her.

“Illya! Lookout, he’s got a gun!”

Instantly, Illya woke automatically grabbing for his pistol. However even in the pitch black of the tent he could tell that no one was trying to enter. He turned to Napoleon who in a highly agitated state was staring wide-eyed at the front of the tent.

The Russian gently pushed his friend down into the sleeping bag. “Easy Napoleon, no one is there.” This was the third time that his partner had awakened him because of hallucinations.

“Are you sure? I could’ve sworn I saw him.”

“Napoleon, there is nobody here. You are hallucinating. Try and go back to sleep.” Illya tried to keep his tone of voice light, not wanting to let his frustration show. How do you rationalize something to someone who is irrational? Fortunately, the little amount of energy Solo had expended exhausted him and he fell back to sleep.

“Good God, is it ever going to stop snowing?” Napoleon Solo peeked out one of the narrow windows in the conference room, acting in Waverly’s stead.

It was a rare occasion the Old Man was not at headquarters, having been snowed in at his Connecticut home along with his body guards.

Kuryakin snickered. “Snow? You call this snow? Back home in Soviet Union we call this a Spring day.”

Solo clicked his tongue. “You know Illya, I could send you on assignment to the steamy tropics, and we know how much you love that?”

Kuryakin bit his tongue, for once.

They arrived at the airport without incident, and Illya was able to drive directly to the private jet that awaited them rather than ferrying Machado through the terminal.

Kuryakin had already gotten out of the car, going to the boot, and opened up a silver briefcase. There the accoutrements to convert his Special to a carbine awaited him and he quickly constructed the weapon.

He stood, completing his task as a hot wind blew his blond hair. Taking a  handkerchief from his suit pocket; he wiped his brow as he’d begin to perspire. His side was hurting, more than he wanted to admit.

Illya was convinced that once he’d gotten out of this humid climate and back to the fall weather in New York, he’d feel much better.

As the deposed dictator stepped from the back seat of the Mercedes, he looked at the steps leading up to the open door of the jet.

“Those would be easier to navigate if you removed my ankle chains Senhor Solo.”

“We’ll see, General,” he replied.

Alexander Waverly patiently tamped down the tobacco in his pipe. He’d known what the man’s reaction would be, so allowed him to voice his displeasure at the decision. The agent was one of the best U.N.C.L.E. had ever had and, as such, was given a little leeway with regard to questioning orders. Given the man’s military history, the Old Man fully understood, and accepted, his agent’s concerns. However, he couldn’t let him get too carried away with his rant.

“Your objection has been noted, Mr Solo,” Waverly finally stated. “Kuryakin may be a communist, but he’s also your new partner.”

Your choices for this first challenge are:

Choice #1: The Hula Doll Affair

In the episode’s prologue, Illya is in a bunker with an unnamed female UNCLE scientist waiting for the outside temperature to reach 90 degrees so he can observe the M4 explosive detonate. He seems quite attracted to her, even commenting that it is getting warm in there to which she replies, “Thank you.” She is never seen or mentioned again. The question is: What if Illya had acted on his attraction?

Choice #2: The Summit Five Affair

When Harry Beldon reveals himself to be a THRUSH agent, he says that he has waited 7 years to make his move. How long he has been with UNCLE, was he always THRUSH or was he a defector, and how he was able to remain undetected are not explained. The question is: What was Harry Beldon’s motivation to betray UNCLE?

The challenge is to choose one of the presented episodes and compose a story that answers the question raised. If you have already written a story that you think best answers that question, by all means, please repost it.

I spy with my little eye...

A Russian.

An American.

I spy with my little eye...

A spy.

An artist.

Is it the spy who creates his world in order to conquer his enemy?

Or does the artist convey just enough of himself to manipulate what needs changing?

Is the Russian the spy who can ferret out truth and subjugate evil?

Or does the American paint a canvas with attitude and élan?

Perhaps the Russian is the artful impersonator.

The American the cunning manipulator.

I spy with my little eye...

Two men whose lives are artful deceit and clever ruses.
