Mr Waverly was becoming increasingly concerned about many of his agents, and their references to ‘Them’. His people seemed to be using it as a reason for everything that went wrong on a mission. Apparently this mythical ‘Them’ engineered difficult and dangerous situation in which agents, especially the Illya Kuryakin, would often get hurt. He decided to get to the bottom of it.
“We can’t explain it, Sir,” Napoleon told the Old Man, glancing up at the ceiling. “We can plan a mission meticulously, but ‘They’ don’t like things going off without a hitch.”
“’They’ seem to delight in making us suffer,” Kuryakin said with a shudder.
“It’s not just the suffering 'they' enjoy,” Solo went on. “It’s putting quite a damper on my social life.”
“That may not be such a bad thing” Waverly replied “If ‘They’ do exist and are responsible for your woes, why am I unaware of them?”
“I can only surmise 'they' have too much respect for your position, Sir,” Illya said.
Getting nowhere, Waverly dismissed the pair. Once they’d gone, he looked up.
“If indeed you are there, please give my people a break. Mr Kuryakin’s medical bills alone cost us a small fortune.”
