A double drabble in response to a brief exchange with [livejournal.com profile] glennagirl, with regard to missing muses

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I am still not entirely sure we are doing the right thing,” Illya Kuryakin commented, as he and Napoleon snuck their way around the Thrush satrapy.

“We can’t leave them in the hands of such insidious people,” Solo replied. “Who knows what they’ll do to them. At the end of the day, they are innocents, and our job is to rescue them.”

“Innocents?!” the Russian spat. “The way they treat us, that is hardly the word I would use.”

“Oh, come on, Tovarisch! They love us. Especially you.”

Illya frowned in the darkness. He couldn’t deny that they loved him but, for reasons he could never fathom, that love often translated into causing him a lot of pain; both physical and emotional.

“Why did Thrush even take them?” he asked.

“Waverly thinks that it’s because they are heavily biased in our favour,” Napoleon told him. “Thrush rarely wins in their hands. I must admit, it’s nice to have a little bit of respite in their absence.”

Reaching the end of a long corridor, the two men could hear the voices of the muses belonging to ‘THEM’,

“Brace yourself, Illya,” Napoleon warned. “I suspect this is going to be very testing.”

(A little 4th wall fun)

Mr Waverly was becoming increasingly concerned about many of his agents, and their references to ‘Them’. His people seemed to be using it as a reason for everything that went wrong on a mission. Apparently this mythical ‘Them’ engineered difficult and dangerous situation in which agents, especially the Illya Kuryakin, would often get hurt. He decided to get to the bottom of it.

“We can’t explain it, Sir,” Napoleon told the Old Man, glancing up at the ceiling. “We can plan a mission meticulously, but ‘They’ don’t like things going off without a hitch.”

’They’ seem to delight in making us suffer,” Kuryakin said with a shudder.

“It’s not just the suffering 'they' enjoy,” Solo went on. “It’s putting quite a damper on my social life.”

“That may not be such a bad thing” Waverly replied “If ‘They’ do exist and are responsible for your woes, why am I unaware of them?”

“I can only surmise 'they' have too much respect for your position, Sir,” Illya said.

Getting nowhere, Waverly dismissed the pair. Once they’d gone, he looked up.

“If indeed you are there, please give my people a break. Mr Kuryakin’s medical bills alone cost us a small fortune.”

“Is something amiss, my friend? You seem pensive.”

“Can’t you feel it, Tovarisch?” Napoleon asked, glancing furtively around the room. “I sense that something which was missing is now returning, stronger than before.”

“Are you talking about ‘THEM’?” Illya whispered, pointing vaguely above him.

“Not strictly them per se, but the thing which drives them to do what they do.”

Napoleon picked up the telephone.

“I’ll get medical to get the comfy chair ready for when I am sitting by your bedside.”

“I suspect I may be spending a lot of time with them in the near future,” Illya grumbled.

I couldn't resist joining in on the 4th Wall fun.  Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jantojones for the inspiration, and to [livejournal.com profile] avirra for her ingenious use of empty quotation marks (that I have borrowed numerous times).
Question: Do we want to explore the Fourth Wall periodically?  I mean, there's a logo :D

"I thought I told you to not say anything to anyone about… you know."

"…"

"You know…"

"I do not know. And who is telling the thing that I do not know, or care about?"

"…"

"Napoleon, you must explain it to me in order for me to grasp or remember what it is you are referencing."

"Someone has written down all of the details of my little tryst with Angelique.  Only you knew about it, so who did you tell?"

"I swear on my honor, and I do have just a smidgeon left, that I have told no one."

"It's them…"
