It was dreary, overcast, felt like snow was in the air in spite of the fact that it was Spring. Illya hadn’t bothered to listen to the radio for a weather forecast; stepping outside confirmed his suspicions.
Like his Babushka, he had the uncanny ability to predict the weather. Not psychic, but simply awareness of his surroundings.
The clouds, the feel of the air, how animals acted were all harbingers of change if one knew what to look for.
The Russian tuned up his collar and smiled, glad he’d worn his wool jacket as passersby shivered at the unseasonable chill.

The Russian looked around from his seat on the couch. He stroked his daughter’s hair absentmindedly and remarked, “Napoleon, we’re never moving, are we?”
“No, I just bought the penthouse next door! What made you ask?”
“I moved in here with exactly six boxes of clothes, books and records. We would need professional movers for your and Leona’s things.”
“I guess you haven’t noticed how much you’ve accumulated since you moved in, Comrade Materialistic!”
“Like?”
“More books, more clothes, more records plus photographs, souvenirs…”
“Alright!”
“Daddy? Papa?”
“Yes?”
“No place is better than here!”
“We’re never leaving. Right, Papa?”
“Right.”

“Illya, do you ever feel that trying to stop Thrush is like King Canute trying to hold back the tide?”
“Canute wasn’t trying to hold back the tide. He was proving to his courtiers that he held no power over the elements. He was saying that, next to God, the power of kings is worthless. The story's apocryphal anyway.”
“Do you have to keep doing that, Tovarisch?”
“What?”
“Debunking and correcting everything.”
“Only when you’re in the wrong. In answer to your original question, I think we have a lot more success against Thrush, than Canute did with the tide.”
