If you're after warmer fiction, here was my attempt at a 4th July fic. Having never celebrated it myself, I just had to imagine how it would be for Illya on that day in America :-)

I love the way you got into IK's mind, using the fireworks to tie the different phases of his life together.

Oh well, where do you think we (as in We the People;), got the idea. I'm Welsh BTW, last name is Meredith. Kentucky is full of Welsh and Scottish folk.

I don't think Americans every actually factor in monarchy, but I suppose there is a part of the celebration that revolves around being able to get rid of politicians we don't like very much. That way everyone celebrates something because there's always someone going out.
Mainly we just like fireworks ;)

I hide during most holidays here - the ramped up "patriotism" makes me somewhat ill any more.

Wonderful dialogue in this piece, and I could visualize everything. Illya's introspection regarding the holiday and his past were...perfect. I could almost smell the charcoal and the ' semi-cremated meat.' (loved that description)

Thank you for adding it to the Writer's and Reader's Choice today. We offer it every Saturday, It gives everyone an opportunity to showcase their favorite stories.

I usually try to post reminders that it's time for Writer's and Reader's Choice on Saturday.

What a thoroughly enjoyable view from Illya's ever expanding mind. This line is wonderful: Napoleon looked at him in surprise. ‘You’ve just eaten your own weight in picnic food! If I’d known an Illya was so much trouble I’d never have chosen one as a pet.

It registers the MFU attitude perfectly. Thanks for posting, and welcome to Section VII.
