This is one of my earlier pieces. (I say that like I've been around for ages, when it's actually slightly less than 3 years). The priest in this story, Father Abnett, is another character I would like to bring back some day.

Click the, entirely unrelated, pic to got to AO3.

I'll say this again. A stunning piece, to be sure. Thank you for adding it to the Writer's and Reader's Choice!

A fine pic, and his expression suits this excellent story very well.

I will repost what I left in AO3. This story has more depth than we first see in the text.
You capture the emotional plight of one caught between belief and the need for redemption from his own thoughts, without assuming faith. Illya lets us examine the dichotomy created by a man with righteous intentions, who must do unrighteous deeds in order to fulfill his intentions; his path is complicated. Scripture tells us that God does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked, pleading instead for him to change his ways and live. Perhaps Illya has the same mindset.

This is very well done. I'm glad you allowed Illya to find some comfort without having an instant, unrealistic, conversion.
