Illyushadarling - See Paris And Die Affair

Poor Illya gets a sound thrashing in the See Paris And Die Affair, and for perhaps the only time we see bruises and what looks to be the real aftermath of a brawl.  He also gets dumped on just a wee bit when Napoleon shoves him under the bus, metaphorically speaking, regarding the jewels in the furniture.  Poor Illyushadarling.  This sequence of pictures portraying Illya's misery is perhaps the best known sequence in the entire episode.

Am I the only person who thinks that IK should be faulted for not even checking out the seams in the coverings? Were the diabolical Dutchmen such good tailors and/or carpenters that no one noticed newer seams in the furniture fabric?

I know, even Corio dismissed the furniture. L-A-Z-Y!

Wouldn't a good spy check out the most obvious places, if he could? Unless he never had the time to make the thorough look and return those items back to their original appearance to prevent discovery. That would be a better story than "Nah, too obvious."

I'd suspect secret compartments in the furniture frames.

And IK must have gotten quite a conk on the head, not to charm Grushy as he did Clotilda Willard.

Can we ever truly fault Illya for anything? Blame it on the writers, but never the Russian. :D Perhaps it was the influence of Paris, he was perhaps distracted by memories of his life there, long lost loves or missed opportunities to live a different life from the one he now is indebted to.
So many other explanations for his lapse of good spy tactics, but looking at that face I can't actually find fault with him. I merely long for the opportunity to comfort him in his obvious distress.

I understand perfectly. But Mr. Waverly isn't as likely to be as forgiving.
