I commend your keen observations regarding the ring, and share your desire to know more (in our fictional realm). Napoleon must strategize his quest for truth ;)
It's a very entertaining pursuit, looking for where Illya/David's ring is at any given moment. It indicates that even parts of the same scenes were filmed at different times with, apparently, zero attention to continuity. Or maybe Illya/David liked to play games to see if anyone noticed...
It applies to his hair, too. In the "See-Paris-and-die" affair, Illya has had a haircut between avoiding being hit by a car, and shortly after getting to the pavement/sidewalk. Some barber!
Continuity seems to have been an afterthought at times; no one expected us to be examining these episodes with such attention to detail. As for the hair, from what I've read from others (who seem to know), Jill was his barber during the early years.
When I was looking for an illustration for the story, I also found I'd caught a member of the film crew in shot - no-one worried about that either. I might post the image sometime.
I'm not sure about the story that Jill cut his hair - unless she did it before he had it cut short. The shorter cut is very professional. I do my husband's hair, so I know how bad it can be...
As a former hairstylist, I'd say the first season does look homemade. It has numerous flaws that a professional wouldn't have made, or at least it looks that way to me. Actually, I think his hair was always a bit off, especially the non-layered Buster Brown cut that he sported during the 70's. It's a bit unfortunate IMO.
I thought it looked as if it was deliberately cut like that so that it would lie flat - it was obviously quite thick. I think I read somewhere that he said Jill didn't cut it but what can you believe in so-called interviews?
The pudding-basin style of the 70s was dreadful. Now that looks as if he did it himself...
Too true. Nothing could complete with the 70s, notoriously the decade that style forgot. I notice that nostalgia has persuaded some to bring back a few of the horrors of that period.
Brilliant. It's always been a source of interest for me. Of course, we know the real life meaning of the ring, but even then you have yo ask why it changed hands so often.
One of the good things about having very little background to the characters is that we writers have a wonderfully large playground to run around in :-)
I read somewhere that the first time he had really forgotten to take it of. And Rather than reshooting the scene he suggested to leave it as it was and try to confuse the viewers a bit. I must say he got his wish granted, because after 50 years we are still confused and intrigued !
