I know today is not a recc'ing day but I felt I had to recommend 'Zaporoche' by [livejournal.com profile] mrua7 (aka. Mlaw). I was watching my favourite Ukrainian dance troupe, Virsky, on YouTube and came across their Zaporozhian Cossack dance. The name immediately reminded me of Marian's fantastic story in which a young Illya visits the Cossacks of the Kuban Steppes, and I went and re-read it straight away. I've no doubt that most of you will have already read it, but for those of you who haven't, click the pic of the dancers to go to ff.net

Edited to add - For those of you who don't like to go to ff.net, Mrua7 has put links to each chapter (published here in Section VII) in her comment below.

The video which sent me back to the story is here.

I forgot to say how amazing (and inspirational) your video was. It suddenly reminded me of all the illustrations and the video I had painstakingly searched out when posting Zaporoche on LJ...I'd completely forgotten about that version. Shame we can't post such things on FF.net. Plus it's a shame things can't be grouped in some semblance of order on FF.net.

I've been holding off posting all my Illya backstories on AO3 as there's so many of them and I need to put them in a proper chronological order...while at the same time leaving wiggle room between each story for more tales of the young IK as there's still lots of gaps that I can fill in, in his backstory.

Thanks so much again for the rec cuz! (and your cool vid)

I've always been amazed by that style of dancing as my neighbor when growing up was Russian and could dance the Kazatsky,(squat-and-kick move) which is just one part of the Hopak dance. (remember IK did it in "The Yukon Affair".

I'm sure it was him doing it as well, though he only did it for a few steps...the hard part is doing more than just a few steps. Knowing how he sinks himself into a part, I'm sure he took a few lessons on how to do it. Balance is the thing, and good leg strength. Heck, it's more steps than I could manage when I was young...the neighbor tried to teach me and I was a runner at the time so had lots of leg strength and flexibility. I could only manage a few steps...AHHHHhhhh those were the days! lol!
