Wow, it's November 1, and we're two months away from 2020.  That's like Star Trek years, right?  Today all you need to think about is writing something using our word of the day, then post it in the comments.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1

Rubicund

[ROO-bi-kehnd]Part of speech: adjective

Origin: latin, late 15th century

  • Having a red complexion
  • Reddish in color

Examples of Rubicund in a sentence

  • A good workout will leave you with a sweaty shirt, a rubicund face, and a better mood.
  • The rubicund cruise ship passengers had clearly spent too much time in the sun with too little sunscreen.

About Rubicund

In an attempt to achieve a rubicund complexion, people have been applying red tint to their cheeks for centuries. Before the blush you can buy at the drugstore, people would use products made from crushed mulberries, red sandalwood, carmine (harvested from insects), and beet juice. Some of the early makeup products were extremely toxic, but others, such as carmine, are still used today.

Did you Know?

Rubicund is used almost exclusively to describe a red face. Other words to describe complexion include swarthy (dark), bronzed, fair, florid and ruddy (both red), and jaundiced (yellow). There are plenty of options to describe someone with sickly pale skin: bloodless, pallid, pasty, and sallow.

Illya's complexion was not its usual pale self, instead his face had become slightly rubicund; he was looking rather disheveled with his tie undone and his shirt half pulled out of his trousers

"Why are you red in the face," Solo asked as his partner stepped into the elevator beside him before the doors silently closed.

"Because that lunatic Samantha in translations is chasing after me again. I never knew a woman could move that fast in high heels and a pencil skirt.

"Why don't you just go out with her and get it over with?"

"Napoleon, if I made that mistake then she would never leave me alone, ever."

"Tovarisch, she's gorgeous. Just take her to bed."

"Have at her yourself my friend, perhaps you will become her new obsession?"

"Obsession you say, well ahem, then never mind." Together they exited the elevator, heading to their office where the door could be locked safely from the inside.

"I think I need to report her to security, she practically attacked me in the map room."

"Do you really want word of that to get out?" Napoleon laughed.

"Why not, if I did the same to her as she did to me, I would be brought up on charges. There should not be a double standard here."
