When they arrived back at the Depardieu estate, Justin went straight to his room with his newly acquired treasure so he could inspect it to his heart’s delight, leaving his houseguests alone with Denise.  “I think we should have a few drinks to relax.  My father’s hobby caused a bit of tension and one should not retire for the evening,” she said as she looked Illya up and down, “tense.”

“Denise, Napoleon and I must contact our sellers to see who has come through for us so that we have something for your father tomorrow.  I’m afraid…”

“Illya, I think Denise is right,” Napoleon interjected, “Drinks are in order; however, you are also right, our sellers do need to be contacted, but I can do it.”  He looked at the young woman and smiled.  “You wouldn’t mind if just Illya had a drink with you for a bit?”  At her headshake, he added, “Good.  Why don’t you go get things set up while I get some information I need for my phone calls from Illya and then I’ll send him along, promise, all right?”

Denise, who had started to look annoyed when Illya was speaking to her, brightened up immediately.  She went to Napoleon, got on tiptoe to kiss his cheek and said, “I like the way you think!  Meet us in the living room when you finish!” and with that, she turned and headed off in that direction, completely missing the look of outrage on the Russian’s face directed at his partner.

“Why did you do that?”

Napoleon moved closer so that his words would be for his partner’s ears only.  “We can both agree that I know women better than you do.  Denise Depardieu is a spoiled, rich brat who can wrap her father around any one of her fingers.  She has set her sights on you.”

“I have noticed.”

“Yes, but I don’t think you noticed how angry she was when you started making excuses for not wanting a drink.  I think she is very much her father’s daughter.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning, that if I hadn’t intervened, we were about to have a big problem.  Justin is not the only person in this house who obsesses, nor is he the only one who would turn vindictive if he doesn’t get what he wants.  Denise shares those traits and right now, she wants you and if she doesn’t get you, I think there will be hell to pay.”

“I do not think having sex with her while we are staying in her father’s house will go over well with Depardieu.  If he finds out, there may still be hell to pay.”

“I don’t envy you, Partner Mine; the line you’re walking now is razor thin; she can create a problem, but I do believe that even if Denise tries to turn her father against you, and me by extension, he won’t do anything until he’s collected all the ‘Marie Antoinette things’ we offer.  By then, our mission will have been accomplished.  I hope.”  He stepped back, clapped his hands together and said in his normal speaking voice, “Okay, I’m sure I’ll muddle through those calls without you now.  Thanks!  Go join Denise and let me make calls.  Tell her I’ll join you two as soon as I finish speaking to everyone.”

Illya walked into the living room to find Denise had set up glasses, an ice bucket and bottles of Scotch and vodka on the coffee table.  She was sitting on the couch and patted it for him to join her.  He smiled at her and sat.

Truth be told, he was a bit stung by what Napoleon had told him because Napoleon was wrong: He did know Denise was used to getting what she wants and she was after him, but he had been so focused on bringing Depardieu down, he had been dismissing her feelings as not essential to the success of the mission.  Mentally bowing to his partner’s skills as a strategist, he decided that he would allow Denise to “catch” him.  “May I prepare your drink, Denise?  Would you prefer Scotch or vodka?”

“Scotch, please.  I’m glad Napoleon is handling your business so that we can have some time together.  I really want to get to know you better.”  She took the glass he proffered and waited until he had poured vodka in his glass.  Raising hers, she clinked it against his and said, “A toast: To the beginning of a beautiful friendship!” before taking a long sip.  She watched as the Russian silently drank down half his vodka.  “I was starting to think you weren’t interested.  I was starting to become vexed.”

“Denise, I was never not interested, but as you can see,” and he held up his left hand where his wedding band shone from his finger, “I am not a free man.  I did not think it fair to start something I cannot finish.”

“Oh, Illya!” she laughed, “This is 1967! I don’t want a relationship!  You’re a good-looking man and I want you.  Your wife wouldn’t mind; I’m sure she knows how desirable you are to other women.  She probably won’t even care.”  She slid closer.  “Kiss me!” she said before taking his mouth with hers.

Illya took command of the kiss and kissed her until she was breathless, all the while thinking he would sleep with her if he had to, but her little speech had made him lose whatever respect he had for her.  Just as she whispered, “Let’s go to my room,” they could hear footfalls coming down the stairs and heading their way.  She managed to smooth her hair and he used a napkin to wipe her lipstick from his face just as Napoleon and Justin came through the doorway.

Justin seemed quite excited.  “Denise, Illya, Napoleon came to my bedroom saying he has good news from one of his contacts, but he wanted to tell me and you at the same time!”  He was like a kid on Christmas morning.  “Tell me now, Napoleon!”

“I will, of course, but let me fix us drinks first.”  He went to the bar to get glasses and then poured two neat Scotches while inwardly noting how Depardieu was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet, he was so excited.  Handing the impatient man a glass, he said, “Illya, I just got off the phone with Marcel.”

Illya knew “Marcel” was Mr. Waverly and let surprise show on his face.  He turned and looked at Justin.  “Marcel is our contact who has access to some of the most fabulous historical items I have ever seen.  I am not entirely sure how he is able to get his hands on them and it is probably better that we do not know.  Having said that,” he turned back to Napoleon, “the price tag is sometimes too high to be considered.  What does he have?”

“The Queen Marie Antoinette Pearl.”

Depardieu gasped audibly, moved to the couch and plopped on it as if his knees had given out.  He actually paled, causing Denise to sit next to him and place her hand on his arm.  “Papa, are you all right?”

He took a quick swallow of his drink and nodded.  “Yes, yes.  Are you sure that is what he said?”  At Napoleon’s nod, he said, “Denise, the Queen Marie Antoinette Pearl is a diamond and pearl pendant.  The pearl itself is teardrop shaped and quite large. She was able to smuggle it and other pieces of her jewelry collection out of the country to her relatives before she was beheaded.  That piece of jewelry hasn’t been seen in public in over one hundred fifty years!  Is he sure he has the real thing?”

“Quite sure,” Napoleon replied, “and of course, you will be allowed to examine the piece before purchase.  There are two things I feel I must tell you: One, this pendant’s cost is quite high; it’s the most expensive item you’ve been offered so far and two, Marcel has another interested party willing to pay the asking price.  He is allowing you to look at and buy it, if you want it, because he owes me a favor.  He does have other items that belonged to her, but the pendant is the rarest thing in his possession.  You could let it go…”

“No!  I must see it and if it is authentic, I must have it!  When and where do we go?”

“Father really, don’t you think you’re taking this a bit too far?  How are you going to buy me a proper Christmas present?”

“Quiet, child!  You simply don’t appreciate the importance of this French history, the timelessness of it.”

“I’m starting to think Mother may be right, you’re getting carried away.  Illya, let’s bundle up and take a walk around the grounds.  It’s a clear night and we can see the stars.”

“Illya is going nowhere now,” Justin said.  “We need to talk about our meeting with this Marcel.  When will it be?”

Illya looked at Denise and shrugged a look that clearly said, What can I do? He was secretly thrilled that it was Justin who said he couldn’t go with Denise; she was angry with her father, not him and that worked in his favor.

“Fine!  I’ll see you later, Illya,” she said before flouncing out of the room.

They wordlessly watched her go and then Napoleon said, “The meeting is tomorrow morning at eleven at the Hotel Mercure Nice Marche’ Aux Fleurs on the Quai Des Etats Unis in Nice.  He wanted to speak to you, Illya, but I told him you were busy.”

“He probably has news about another piece I had inquired about when we spoke last.”

Justin asked, “Is this piece you’re speaking about something I would be interested in acquiring?”

“Possibly.  It is something that belonged to Marie Antoinette, but I cannot say anything about it until I find out if he has it.”

“Then by all means, please return his call.  Let us all retire and I will see you in the morning.”

When the agents got back to their room, they went into the bathroom and turned on the water in the tub and sink.  “Napoleon, will the Old Man really be meeting with us tomorrow?”

“I’m not sure.  We’re to go to Room 3445 promptly at eleven was all he told me.”

“I almost feel sorry for Depardieu.  When this is all said and done, he will remember that you offered him an out that he did not take.”

Napoleon smiled.  “I knew as soon as I told him there was another buyer willing to pay the price that he was hooked.  Bankruptcy, here he comes.”

“Tomorrow will be quite interesting, I think,” Illya said.  “Let’s get some rest.”

Poor Illya but at least Napoleon and Justin helped him out. And Justin, he is just way to obsessed to see what is happening. Breakdown here you come.

I'd like to see Depardieu bouncing on the balls of his feet! That was a vivid image. So we might have two transactions in one day if Illya's item comes through as well as the necklace.

Nice tactics from Napoleon, and smooth, solid writing from alynwa.

Also, good use of another sort of suspense.
