At his nadir, he was bent, worn, blistered, aching in every bone. He knelt on the sand with his forehead on the ground, eyes closed, and prayed to be allowed to sleep. All of that would depend on his master, and he had enough bruises to show that his master’s whims were unpredictable and cruel. Truly, being an agent was a terrible job, at times.
