“Napoleon, will you please stop pacing and just find something to amuse yourself,” Illya glanced up from his magazine. He was stretched out on the leather sofa in their office, his jacket draped over his desk chair and his shoes kicked off. Surprisingly, one of his socks had a hole in it and his big toe was poking through.

His partner looked at it with disdain, “Either get that sock darned or buy a new pair will you?”

“The last time I had one of the ladies from communications darn my sock, I got in trouble with the Old Man, being told succinctly that was not their job.” Illya did a perfect imitation of Alexander Waverly that made Napoleon burst out laughing.

“Thanks for the chuckle, but I can’t help being annoyed and sorry, it’s not with you. I had a great date scheduled for tonight and this snow storm has ruined my plans. That’s what was supposed to amuse me this evening, and most of the night, if you get my drift?”

“Oh was that a snow pun?” Illya asked, completely deadpan.

“Tsk.”

Illya sat up, putting his reading material aside and slipping on his shoes. “You know you really should find a hobby for yourself that does not involve women.”

“Such as?”

“Reading is an excellent way to pass the time. As you see I often do it, it is relaxing as well as edifying.”

Napoleon huffed. “I do read, when I’m in the mood, and you know I’m very well read for that matter.”

“True, I did not mean to insinuate that you were not.  Well we need to find something for you to pass the time as we are stuck here in headquarters for the duration of the storm and likely most of tomorrow until the city digs itself out. Guest quarters are full, so it is this office or nothing, and I do not intend to spend the night keeping you happy.”

Napoleon sat down at his desk, playing with a pile of paper clips as was his usual habit when bored.

After several minutes of listening to the paper clips hitting everything but the ashtray they were being aimed at, Illya finally had it and spoke up again.

“Will you please stop that? Why not go to communications and man a station, I am sure you could find some lovely fräulein in Germany, a mademoiselle in the Paris office, or even a lady in London with whom you can strike up a conversation.”

Napoleon’s face lit up. “You know for a cold-hearted fellow that’s a pretty warm idea, thanks.”

“You are welcome...I think?”

The doors to their office opened silently and Solo disappeared out into the corridor, heading directly to communications.

Illya sighed contentedly, kicking of his shoes again and resuming his position on the sofa, this time pulling a throw blanket over himself; now content his little maneuver had won him his claim to sleep there.

The next morning Napoleon sauntered into the office, looking a little bleary-eyed from being up half the night chatting with a fair number of U.N.C.L.E. ladies, much to his delight.

He was going to the West Berlin office next week and had dates all lined up with Heidi, Bruna, and Ilse...those were just the dinner dates.

Illya raised his head as soon as he heard Napoleon come in and rubbing the minor kink he had in his neck; he sat up.

“So did you enjoy yourself?”

“Immensely, though I ended up falling asleep in a chair,” Napoleon said, eyeing the Russian suspiciously.”I think you told me what you did on purpose, just so you could get the couch for the night.”

Illya gave his partner a one-eyed squint, trying not to give away his little plan.

“I did not make you go.”

“True, but you knew I would, didn’t you?” He sat at his desk, opening up his bottom drawer and pulling out a fresh shirt.

Illya shrugged, not willing to answer the question, but finally smiled at his partner.

“I thought as much. Hmm, and I assumed I was the good one at strategy,” Napoleon chuckled.

“You are, but there are times I can manage to outsmart you.” Illya stood, stretching like a cat.

“Mmm, yeah, but only a few,” Napoleon countered.

You have anything yet? You picked a hum-dinger for this Mood-Y challenge.

I have the germ of an idea. The question really is if I can pull it off. [chuckle]

Yes, I went with a really tough challenge this time around. Next one I'll pick something a bit easier.

Shame I didn't realized the snapshot was perfect.

Well, look at it this way... This story might give other writers a direction to go in for the Mood-Y challenge.

You can think of it as your contribution to helping fellow "brain-frozen" [livejournal.com profile] section7mfu authors. [chuckle]

Cute exchange! I like how Illya pulled one over on his partner while making him happy all at the same time.

Carabele is right; this would have been perfect. Oh well, you'll think of something. I hope I do. I posted up a story (late) for Wednesday's Child that currently is a one-shot of a conversation between Napoleon and Mark about April that I hope to expand into a longer tale.

I have so much to do!

Fun little story, like the easy, normal exchange between the two. Just like Napoleon to spend the night making dates and Illya to catch some shut eye after out-smarting his partner. Enjoyed it, thanks!
