A Little Drabble Do Ya - Weather

Originally posted two years ago and seemed appropriate as I'm ill myself currently.

"Hm - your eyes look a little glassy. Are you feeling under the weather, chum?"

"Excuse me?"

"Under the weather? Feeling sick?"

"What does the weather have to do with being sick? Are we not always under the weather?"

"Huh, I suppose we are. Wonder where that saying came from?"

"If I knew, I would not have asked you, would I?"

"I suppose not. I wonder where I could look that up?"

"I am not sure, but have we gotten off the topic?"

"Possibly. Err, what was the topic?"

"I do not remember. I think this cold is affecting my memory."

I was talking with a Frenchman and that phrase came up. He'd never heard it until he moved to England. Apparently, in France, they say 'I'm not on my plate'. Which to me is just as baffling.

I was told once that there was a superstition that mentioning illness would draw it to you. I wonder if that's why we have so many round about ways of saying that we aren't feeling well (or as my Grandmother would say 'off your feed').

*l* I remember when Stephanie Zimbalist was on Johnny Carson talking about collecting sayings. Her favorite was 'Don't let your teeth fall out' meaning don't get too excited.
