Illya Kuryakin hadn’t seen his apartment for almost two weeks and was very much looking forward to his own bed. He was just handing his security badge to Janine on reception when he was stopped by Napoleon.

“Please don’t tell me we have an assignment,” Illya groaned. “I’m tired.”

“Don’t panic Tovarisch,” Napoleon soothed. “I just thought you could use a ride.”

“Thank you my friend,” the Russian replied with evident relief. “It would be very much appreciated.”

“Would you mind if I called at my place first? I’ve got plans and need to pick something up.”

Illya told him that he didn’t mind. Even though they would end up backtracking on themselves, it would still be quicker that taking the subway. His car was out of action and he hadn’t been relishing the prospect of public transport.

Arriving at Napoleon’s building, Illya was confused when he was invited to the apartment.

“I thought you were just picking something up.”

“I remembered there was something I wanted to show you.”

Illya was instantly suspicious, but didn’t say anything. He had a feeling he knew what Napoleon was up to and was actually quite appreciative of it.

“Okay,” he conceded. “I’ll come up.”

When they reached the apartment, Napoleon unlocked the door and invited Illya to step in first. He was greeted by Alexander Waverly, April Dancer and Mark Slate.

“S dnyom rozhdeniya,” (Happy Birthday) they said in unison.

They had decided against hiding and yelling ‘surprise’. Everyone knew you didn’t startle an armed Section 2 agent. Illya turned back to Napoleon with a huge smile on his face.

“Did you think I’d let your birthday slide?” Napoleon asked, as he put a hand on his partner’s shoulder. “I know you’re tired, but I’m sure you’re awake enough for the dinner April and Mark have prepared.”

Illya became aware of the wonderful scents coming from the kitchen and his stomach rumbled in response.

“You know my birthday doesn’t matter to me,” he stated. “However, it doesn’t mean I won’t celebrate when my friends organise something wonderful. I knew you had something up your sleeve.”

Illya then turned to Mr Waverly. “I wouldn’t have expected you to be here Sir. Not that you aren’t welcome.”

“I had to be here Mr Kuryakin,” the Old Man replied with a chuckle. “With everyone on assignment, it was up to me to organise your gift.”

The Russian’ eyes lit up when mark stepped aside to reveal a large gift on the table and he took little prompting to open it. His heart melted when he discovered a simple, yet beautiful, copper samovar within the box. Illya had been meaning to get one for years, but had never seemed to get around to it; settling instead for a kettle. He hugged Napoleon, shook hands with Mr Waverly and Mark, and kissed April on both cheeks.

“Thank you all,” he said excitedly. “When is dinner?”

The End.

I have a few birthday stories out there, and like you I've made Illya's birthday the same as David's in my stories/world. Although in canon he has a different birthday, which is named by Zodiac sign. (I think, but can't remember at the moment)
