“Darling, would you look at that?”
“What luv?”
“The leaves are starting to change color. It’s sort of depressing.”
April Dancer and Mark Slate were seated on a bench in Central Park, simply getting some fresh air. All senior agents had been spent the entire morning in meetings at U.N.C.L.E. headquarters, being briefed on the latest intel regarding T.H.R.U.S.H. and their most recent schemes.
“Let’s see…our feathered friends have tried to poison the water supplies in Italy, and there was a bomb-making satrap in Marseilles mind you,” Mark recapped some of the mornings discussion. “And lest we forget another training camp children to become future assassins. They were develping that death ray in the Alps….now that’s wot I find depressing my dear.”
“And the biggie?” They both blurted out at the same time. “A plan to get Mount Fuji in Japan to erupt on cue!”
“So compared to all that, the first day of fall you find depressing? ” Mark asked as he adjusted his corduroy hat on his head.
“I know… I guess I’m just a little sad that summer's gone already and I didn’t get much time to enjoy it. Basking in the sun on a pristine beach….ahhh, what I wouldn’t have given to have that happen,” April sighed, “and not to have to worry about the world being taken over by a bunch of feather-brained megalomaniacs.”
“Basking in the sun luv? You won’t catch me doing that ducks,” Mark laughed.
“Why’s that?”
“April, you do remember that I’m from jolly olde England where rain is nearly a daily occurrence and we’re all pretty pale-skinned. I’m with Illya on disliking the heat...ugh, sweating, being thirsty. I’m not much for swimming either. No thank you.”
“Hmm then I guess you’re not going to like what I have to say,” she became very serious.
“And what’s that?” Mark stood up, taking a stretch. It was time to get back to headquarters.
“We’re going to Greece on an assignment...specifically the island of Crete and it's quite warm I'm told in the month of September. We’re to oversee the cataloguing and return of antiquities that’ve been recovered from black marketeers. Not exactly a heavy duty mission, more like a bit of fluff really, and there’s going to be a fair bit of down time, so maybe I’ll get to a beach after all. Mmmm and some nice tan Greek gods to watch, if you get my drift.” April winked at her partner.
“Well, I guess I could suffer with the weather...just need to remember to bring me ‘Coppertone’ and a hat,” Mark snorted his displeasure. “Though I suppose I could enjoy a bit of bird watching….the Greek goddess kind, mind you.”
"Mark dearest, please don’t bring that awful hat you’re wearing with you?”
“Why April Dancer, I’ll have you know this hat is considered quite the fashion on Carnaby Street.”
“Oh you mean Carnaby Street in Oshkosh?” Her eyes twinkled with mischief.
“Oy, there’s no such place...only one Carnaby Street and that’s in London.”
“Well don’t let anyone know you bought that hat there darling, it might ruin their fashion reputation.”
“Cute.”
April looked up, feeling a drop of water hit her face.
“Oh darn it’s starting to rain and I don’t have my umbrella...my hair is going to be ruined,” she pouted
Mark, in a move of chivalry, lifted his hat and plopped it on his partner’s head.
“Thank you darling,” she called out as they began to trot along the path before the sky opened up.
“Ahh, you appreciate my hat now don’t you?”
“If I didn’t know better Mark Slate I would have thought you special ordered this rain just to make your point.”
“Interesting thought my dear,” it was his turn to smile mischievously, just as the rain came down in buckets.
They made it just in time to one of the many pedestrian tunnels located throughout the park and stood there watching the deluge, washing away more of the leaves from the trees.
“You know what luv...I think I’m looking forward to Crete after all.” Mark removed his suit jacket and shook the rain from it.
“Now why doesn’t that surprise me?" April smiled, rubbing her arms with her hands to create a little friction.
