Just A Step Away - Wednesday is for April
Sep. 24th, 2014 10:46 amA tree lined boulevard, people passing each other amiably as fall leaves drop in a delicate dance that is propelled by a soft breeze. Among those in this parade of contentment walk two people, a dark haired man and an auburn haired young woman; their arms are linked in a familiar fashion as they chat and laugh together. It seems the perfect scene of a love affair amidst the shower of golds and copper that lines the walkway.
"Do you think they've spotted us yet Napoleon?" April Dancer is on her first assignment with the dashing CEA of UNCLE Northwest. She is slightly intimidated by him, for his position as well as his nearly irresistible charm. But they are professionals, and her real romantic yearnings are for another agent, the Russian.
"April my dear, it would impossible to not spot you. Even THRUSH can be smitten by a gorgeous redhead like you." He winks at her, a teasing yet somehow brotherly affection seeping through the usual Solo flirtation. This young woman is a first among her kind; no female agent has been assigned to Section II prior to her appointment to New York.
"You, Mr. Solo, are outrageous, and I thank you." Her smile is genuine, as is her appreciation for the man's protective nature. She is a highly capable agent, but a woman never truly tires of feeling like she can count on the man at her side.
At the end of the block is a small cafe with outdoor seating. Waiting for the couple are their partners, Illya Kuryakin and Mark Slate. This little stroll has been a test of sorts, something to draw out a local group of THRUSH agents who have recently kidnapped three UNCLE agents; two of them survived. April is aware that she has become a prime target, as is UNCLE's top man in the field, Napoleon Solo. The two of them make a perfect pair of sitting ducks, so to speak, and are in view of at least twenty-four pair of friendly eyes that watch them from across the street from various hidden locations.
As Solo and Dancer approach the end of this little experiment and the two men who wait for them, a green van slows beside them. Napoleon is immediately on alert and April, sensing a sudden tension in his arm, responds with an equal measure of caution. Mark and Illya have spotted the vehicle and begin to make their way, slowly and without any indication of their purpose, towards the location of their vulnerable partner.
Suddenly a door opens and two men jump out, their intentions obvious. Equally without warning, Slate and Kuryakin are on them, wrestling them to the ground while Napoleon shoots into the van, hitting the driver with a sleep dart.
All of it takes less than thirty seconds, leaving April slightly breathless at the speed and efficiency displayed by these seasoned agents.
April Dancer intends to meet their abilities and then some.
