It is, perhaps, the most popular of genres within fanfiction, fandom and beyond.  It fuels fantasies, inspires scads of stories and makes our hearts ping a little.  Why is it such a draw?
In thinking about the series, I recall fewer incidents than we'd probably like to have seen, and most of them do involve the Russian.  The most notable, of course, comes in the Children's Day Affair, after Mother Earth (Wait, it's Mother Fear ;), lashes Illya with her strop.

Of course it is the elusiveness of that chest hidden in the shadows that compels us to keep looking, but the scene has the potential of being a very poignant moment for the partners: Napoleon wincing in sympathy at his friend's pain while Illya tries to emerge from his torment.  He has, by this time, been discovered because of some very loud moaning; I'm guessing it's a tactic and not a low pain threshhold ;)
Anyway, Hurt/Comfort.  Tell me more, why is it  so compelling?

A/N – This isn’t the story I’d originally planned for this challenge, but following the loss of Svetlanacat4, I wanted to write something to commemorate her. It’s not very long, and I’m afraid that it is a little sad, but I hope it conveys what I’m trying to say.

“All right, thank you, John. Over, out.”  Illya turned off the walkie talkie and slipped it into the sleeping bag to keep the batteries warm and conserve their power. He turned towards Napoleon and embraced him tightly. Napoleon immediately moved even closer seeking the warmth radiating from Illya’s body and mumbled, “Cold! So damn cold,” before falling asleep again.

Chapter 14

Illya took deep breaths, working at stifling his emotions and remaining calm. Removing his snowshoes, he stepped up to the charred fuselage laying upside down in the snow and took stock of the damage. Both wings were sheared off, the tail section had separated from the cabin just aft of the rear door. He climbed over the exposed bulkhead and peered inside. The blackened interior reeked of burned fuel and chemicals released when the plastics and foam from the seats ignited. The cockpit windows were smashed, the instrument panel was completely destroyed. A large spruce bough had rammed through the side cockpit window on the copilot’s side. In spite of the horrific damage, Illya saw no corpses. Maybe they got out or were ejected.

I don't normally go for hc, but I enjoy [livejournal.com profile] mrua7 's Better To Light A Candle Than To Curse The Darkness , a fic which should please anyone with the slightest taste for Napoleon/April.

Maybe it's the snow...  The stories were super entertaining (thanks to all), but we might have to apologize to Illya for all of the bullets, knives and bludgeoning instruments (including that tree ;) we tortured him with.  I'm laughing at us, just a little, because every story submitted today had Illya in need of medical attention, pronto. I think we've just hit the high bar in hurt/comfort.  It must be the snow.
Thanks IK for letting us pick on you.
