LJ wouldn't let me post a photo with my comment, so here's a pic of creamed chipped beef. The photo says it all...

I could see the pic in your comments, and I can see it here. This bigger picture makes it look even worse.

Remember the smell of the pig feet cooking in the kitchen. Taffy (our dog) would guard the stove with her life hoping for some

That's what my dad called it too. :) He developed a taste for it in the army.

I think all people in the army had it, actually I would eat it with my dad. Not sure that I would now though

I loved SOS when I was growing up! Haven't had it in over 40 years, but I thought it was good.

It's yummy... on toast or a waffle.

It doesn't, and my grandmother always added sauteed mushrooms and onions so it had more flavor than just the cream sauce and dried beef. Heck even canned mushrooms and onion make it taste good. I do like it though.

Every 2 or 5 years or so, I will make it. When it is made and presented well, it is a wonderful comfort food. Made poorly, it is a salty, salty horror. Presented like the picture, it is easy to see how it got its nickname.
