That one is a little vague I suppose. However, I think a story can be based on canon but still lack the ambiance and message of the original concept. On the other hand, you can write a story with all the angles firmly intact and allude to the canon behind it without spitting it out verbatim. It may still be vague, but thanks for answering anyway ;)
