Prompt: I took a shortcut

My thanks to Sparky955 for the beta.

“Admit it. You are lost.” Illya was careful to keep his tone neutral.

“I’m not lost. According to the map, I took a shortcut. It just didn’t lead to where I thought it would.”

“Usually you have to know where you are going first in order to take full advantage of a short cut.”

“Okay, so it isn’t a very good short cut, but it is a THRUSH map, after all, and predisposed to work against us.” Napoleon paused to study the map. “Okay, so we are headed north.”

“Then it’s the first time I’ve seen the sun set in the east.”

“What?” Napoleon looked up and sighed dejected. “All right, I concede. We are lost. Now what?”

“Well, the rational man would stop and set up camp while there is still light.”

“Rational men don’t have a satrapy of annoyed THRUSH agents on their heels.”

“True, but I think we lost them when we hit that series of switchbacks. For a long time, we were trailing them.”

Oh my, angst and friendship and hurt and comfort and ... Napoleon and Illya ...
Can you really resist a story that opens like this?

Deep in the snow and far away lay a silent prison camp. Freezing inmates wrapped in layers of clothes and blankets eked out their meager rations and endured the back-breaking drudgery. In the small hours of the morning, a prisoner huddled on the top bunk in a hut with many other imprisoned souls. Lost in thought, blue eyes saw only the world of before, circled with the darkness of despair.

Jan Beckwith gives us a picture of despair but then, as in all things MFU, the determination of friendship against harrowing circumstances.

I don't generally write for short timeframe challenges because I just don't write that fast, honestly. I'm a "go over it a million times before posting" kind of writer. But a particular quote I read today just struck me as apropos for this challenge. So I hope the reader can forgive any typos or such I might have missed in this piece since it was the work of just a couple hours.
