On the third day of Halloween, my truelove gave to me...three anthropomorphic representations of death.

My Halloween recommendation for today is Death is Easy by [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58.

(Note that this is a different story than Angels of Death, which mrua7 linked yesterday. It was inspired by the same image, though.)

A fine rec for any season, but particularly for early spring (pace Punxsutawny Phil) is [livejournal.com profile] spikegirl58 's In Spring Eternal Hope Lives. A good friendship fic, plus suspense, plus well done background and a couple of good ocs.

Spike started this story and invited any cousin to continue it, so I wrote Part II.  The link takes you to the "Secrets Past" Collection in AO3 containing both stories.

It also happens that someone did write a Part III under the title "Who'd Think It" which to my knowledge, is only posted on ff.net.  It's a good chapter and worth reading.  If someone knows the author, perhaps they can reach out to her and encourage her to add the chapter to the AO3 collection.  I'm having a brain fart right now because I don't remember the author's name.  I did reach out at the time I read it, but never heard back.

Enjoy!

This would be definitely reccable at any time of year, but particularly Halloween. [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58 's The Beetlejuice Affair is a postmortem fic, but I don't think any reader will find it too sad. A crossover, and both canons are written well.

This is one of my favourite tales from FF by Uncle Charlie, entitled "Christmas by Any Other Name"...such a sweet little fic, one of those stories that I wish I had written.  One day maybe...

If she will forgive me, I'd like to post a link to a story that made me laugh my socks off for ages when i first read it, and every time I read it, I still chuckle myself silly. All my compliments to Spikesgirl58 A HEALTHY GLOW (link to AO3)

The first MFU story I ever wrote was The Romanian Affair. It was written in 1979 and is pretty raw. At that point I'd not seen any of the episodes and relied upon the books, magazines and TBG's memory for my information. It was first published in UNCLE Special in 1980 and has been reprinted since. I've since tried to rewrite it and it never worked, so I just let it be.

A story written by Spikesgirl in her other guise, Uncle Charlie.

Summary: Napoleon is held captive by THRUSH and it's up to Illya to rescue him.

I simply love the Working Stiffs story by Uncle Charlie a.k.a. [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58. I can't get enough of the tales of the less glamourous UNCLE employees. There are many to choose from, but I have chosen this one to recommend because it is one of my favourites. The link takes you to ff.net.

Title: The Twelve Days of Christmas, ala Napoleon Solo
Author: Spikesgirl58
Rating: Gish

This is from the vaults, but I hope you will have fun with it. I have actually made this tree and used it for Christmas more than once.

Illya Kuryakin turned the corner into his office and stopped. There, sitting on the file cabinet he shared with Napoleon was a vase. In it was a small tree branch, its skeletal twigs reaching for the ceiling. Dangling from one of the branches was a bullet with a bow on it.

“Napoleon, I almost hesitate to ask.” He looked over at his partner, who was wearing a most satisfied grin. “What is that?”

Warning - I am sorry about this, but I post this in Vintage Ads and Heather McCrillis bunnied me.

They said the wail could be heard from throughout UNCLE HQ.

Some though it might have been a ghost of a slain agent, reliving his last moments again and again.

Others though it was the scream of an enemy agent, frantic from questioning.

Still other thought it might have been a reaction of a new truth serum that the guys in the lab had been experimenting with.

There was even a whisper that someone had just received their first paycheck and saw the withholding stub.

The truth was much less exciting, but still interesting.

Question Choice: Challenge # 2:
In season two’s “The Round Table Affair,” Illya has been detained in the Ingolstein jail for a variety of crimes. To pass the time, he is reading from the Ingolstein Travel Guide to Linda, a woman in Communications. At one point she says, “Oh, Mr. Kuryakin, it sounds so romantic! I wish I were there with you” to which he answers, enthusiastically and without a hint of sarcasm, “So do I, Linda.” The challenge is: Who is Linda and what is she to Illya?

I knew he was there even before turning around. “Back from Ingolstein, are you?”

There was a chuckle and I spun around in my chair. Illya was leaning against the door frame, grinning and looking for all the world as if he’d just come back from a vacation as opposed to a thrill-packed, action affair. He straightened and entered.

“Are you sure you want to stay in Communications, Linda? You would make a great agent.”

“And leave all of this?” I gestured to the reel-to-reels that were busy spinning and stopping, spinning and stopping. It was a little like my heart at the moment. I didn’t usually come face-to-face with the agents. They were just voices to me.

He seemed to pick up on something. These guys weren’t agents for nothing.   They knew how to read people and make instant judgments… among other things. He seemed to suddenly remember something.

“I picked up a little something for you.” He held out a slender box to me and I took it slowly. I had never gotten as much as a card from an agent before. For the briefest of moments, I wanted to never open it, just cherish it.

“Illya, that is so sweet.” I carefully lifted the lid, then gasped. Lifting it free of the tissue paper, I held it up. The sword was long and sender, it blade festooned with faux jewels caught the lights and danced. The baes was a chunk of some white rock, also sparkly in the fluorescent lights “It’s lovely… it’s a weapon?”

Squeaky Clean is one of [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58's Working Stiff series, which means we get to meet an excellent oc, and watch an exciting adventure. Very canonesque; plus an almost Gotham scene as well.

It's reader's choice this week from me, and I've chosen one of the 'Working Stiffs' series by Uncle Charlie a.k.a. [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58

I'm using this story as a way to recommend the whole series. They are stories which are told from the POV of various members of the U.N.C.L.E support staff. In 'Down in the Mouth', one of our boys is in need of some very dangerous dental work. The reason I picked this particular story was for the last line :-)

The link will take you to ff.net (and on of these days I'll learn how to do one of those fancy link things.)

Prompt: I took a shortcut

My thanks to Sparky955 for the beta.

“Admit it. You are lost.” Illya was careful to keep his tone neutral.

“I’m not lost. According to the map, I took a shortcut. It just didn’t lead to where I thought it would.”

“Usually you have to know where you are going first in order to take full advantage of a short cut.”

“Okay, so it isn’t a very good short cut, but it is a THRUSH map, after all, and predisposed to work against us.” Napoleon paused to study the map. “Okay, so we are headed north.”

“Then it’s the first time I’ve seen the sun set in the east.”

“What?” Napoleon looked up and sighed dejected. “All right, I concede. We are lost. Now what?”

“Well, the rational man would stop and set up camp while there is still light.”

“Rational men don’t have a satrapy of annoyed THRUSH agents on their heels.”

“True, but I think we lost them when we hit that series of switchbacks. For a long time, we were trailing them.”

“Really?” Napoleon scraped up a small smile. “At least I did something right on this mission.”Read more... )

Now it's Christmas, and Nutcracker season. So that some of its cast can come in from the cold, and because I like the ficlet a lot, I'm reccing:

I haven't written any holiday stories yet (which will be rectified in the coming days), so instead I offer you something from Uncle Charlie aka [livejournal.com profile] spikesgirl58

I love this story because it is told from a different point of view. The summary says 'Illya's hurt and THRUSH is on the hunt. What's a little cat to do? Quite a bit with her friends at her back.'
