Entering his shared office for the first time in three weeks, Illya found it empty. Then he remembered that, when he’d spoken to Napoleon the day before, he had said he was heading to Berlin for two days. Sitting down at his desk, Illya sighed contentedly. His chair wasn’t the most comfortable, but following several weeks undercover on a cattle ranch, it felt like sitting on clouds. He had already given his verbal report to Mr Waverly and, as soon as his written report was done, he had a date with a hot bath.

“Go ahead, Leona.  Remember what I told you,” Napoleon whispered to the three year old as they stood outside Illya’s bedroom door.

“Yes, Daddy,” she whispered back before knocking on the door.

“Who is it?”

“Leona Nicole!”

“Come.”

The little girl ran to the bed, climbed up and began to kiss the Russian’s head.  “Happy birfday, Papa!  Happy birfday!”

Illya laughed as he hugged her close.  “Thank you, Daughter!  I could not have asked for a better way to wake up than your face and kisses.”

“Daddy is making a special breakfast!”

“This day just keeps getting better and better.”

A very short story, instead of a drabble...

Napoleon walked into the office he shared with his partner. Illya was writing up a report, oddly by hand as he usually typed them.

“Machine not working tovarisch?”

“I need to replace the ribbon but in the meantime I am handwriting and will ask one of the secretaries to type it up for me.”

“Were you planning to celebrate sometime tonight?”

“Celebrate?”

“You know...la la laaaa la la la... it's September 19th," Napoleon lilted the melody to ‘happy birthday.’

“Oh that. I forgot the date, though it really does not matter.”

“Well I didn’t,” Solo grinned. He produced a small wrapped bundle from behind his back.  “Many happy returns birthday boy.”

Kuryakin accepted the oddly wrapped gift; it looked like a towel, but something was inside it.

He folded it back and out popped the head of a dark tabby kitten. Its fur was medium length with a tuft of white on its chest and the tips of its paws were white as well.

“Not exactly what I had planned as your birthday gift, but it presented itself to me this morning and I thought you’d like it.”

“I do Napoleon,” Illya was busy stroking and scratching the feline’s small head which elicited a loud purr from it.

“So what are you going to name it?”

“I think I will call it Nickie.”

“Good name. Now tonight however, you will be celebrating as I have plans to take you out to dinner at the 21 Club.  April and Mark will be joining us...I think they have a little something for you as well,”Napoleon winked.

“Thank you my friend for the kitten and for tonight as well as for reminding me it was my birthday. Until recently it was something that had little meaning, so you must forgive me when I forget the date...too many unpleasant memories associated with it.”

“Illya, that was in the past, let it go.”

“I will, I promise this,” Illya winked back at him.

“Good, now finish that report; I’m hungry and want to eat dinner."

“Hey, that’s my line!”

Happy Birthday to you
You belong in a zoo
You look like a monkey
And act like …

The children's impish version of the traditional birthday song was met with an icy blue glare, causing the singer to stop his teasing refrain.

''Oh, umm… gee, sorry Mr. Kuryakin.  It's just a little, um… joke." The last word came out like small squeak, Frasier Jones from the mail room now completely cowed by the unfriendly agent.

Napoleon stepped in to try and ease the tension.

"Frasier, please don't worry, he's just annoyed at turning sixty-four.' There was a look of astonishment from Frasier.

"Yeah, all of those THRUSH drugs seem to have stopped the aging process.  We're all a lot older than you might think."  Frasier tried to read Napoleon's expression.  Would a Section II agent lie to him?

"Oh, and please don't say anything to Miss Dancer, she's older than all of us." Illya was interested in the game, and the look of amazement on Frasier's face.

"Yes, and Mr. Waverly, well … I've said too much."

Frasier tried to read their expressions but nothing seemed to say they weren't serious.  No wonder these guys spent so much time in Medical.

“Happy thirty-fifth birthday, Tovarisch,” Napoleon enthused, upon entering the office he shared with his partner.

With great ceremony, he placed a small cupcake in front of Illya, and lit the tiny candle he’d put in it.

“Only five years until you retire from the field.”

“If I make it that far,” the Russian replied, blowing out the candle.

“You’ll make it,” Solo told him, with conviction. “I would be very surprised if you weren’t still kicking fifty years from now.”

“I’ll be eighty-five,” Illya mused, running a hand through his blond locks. “I wonder if I’ll still have my hair.”
