55 Years Ago Today...
Sep. 22nd, 2019 08:25 amWe're celebrating this event with a challenge here on Section VII: The Long Story Affair Challenge.
You can find the stories on AO3 in a collection of the same name, The Long Story Affair Challenge.
Writers, if you haven't already, please make sure and post your stories within the collection. We want to make certain that the entries are easily found and identified as part of this challenge.
Along with the stories we're posting today and hopefully into the next week, please feel free to share some of your favorite moments in the series. Use the comments section to share what you love about MFU, about an episode or characteristic of the show and its characters.

This story features the popular fanon tropes of Illya's dislike for being in medical, and his irrational hatred of green jelllo. It began as two short stories which I amalgamated and extended. Those two stories ('An Unknown Fear' and 'An Explanation') had a combined word count of1458. Somehow, I managed to create a 11,000 word story from them.
My enormous gratitude goes to

Not-So-Long Story - Famine or Feast
Sep. 22nd, 2019 10:38 amFamine or Feast
For what it's worth, My Seven Days of Halloween story from last year did end up at 7200 words and fits the challenge requirements. (My few other long pieces mostly focus on Illya and Faustina.)
Out of Hand
The Long Affair Challenge
Sep. 22nd, 2019 12:02 pmIt's called "The day the earth shook Affair" and it has lots of angst, to say the least."D
Here's a taste...

Helicopters circled the perimeter, lights flashed and emergency vehicles screeched to a stop.
A voice called out over a bullhorn, “Please exit the building in an orderly fashion. This is not a drill, I repeat this is not a drill. Proceed to the nearest vehicles, and remain calm.”
That voice was Napoleon Solo’s.
Inside the remotely located Research and Development Headquarters of the U.N.C.L.E. klaxons were blaring; red and green lights flashed their warning.
Illya Kuryakin stood near the main doors, directing which way everyone should go. He tried to keep a rough headcount, estimating the number of people who’d already escaped.
There was just no time.
Word of the Day
Sep. 22nd, 2019 12:13 pmEschew
- To avoid as a point of habit
- To shun or abstain from something for moral reasons
Examples of Eschew in a sentence
- She eschews alcohol and drugs in favor of a healthy, low-key lifestyle.
- Many religious figures in history have eschewed basic comforts to get closer to the noble truths they pursue.
About Eschew
Many religious faiths around the world require the eschewing of certain foods, activities, or lifestyles as a sign of respect or reverence towards their god or gods. Judaism is among the most famous of these, with strict adherents eschewing fish without fins or scales, shellfish, and pigs.
Did you Know?
What does eschewing something from your life have to do with being shy? Their relationship is etymological, as both words originally came from an Old German verb that meant "to frighten off."
Illya has to rescue himself from the clutches of London's subterranean terrors while Napoleon holds the fort. The day is saved without their help...
