That's what I thought, but the blade is curved, so wasn't sure. I used to have straight edge for cutting hair :D It's a terrible thing to do to a hair shaft.
It's what used to be called a cut throat razor. The handle is curved to fit comfortably into the hand and the projection from the end of the blade is for the barber to hook his thumb over to hold the blade steady. They were sharpened by being stropped on a leather strap.
They were superseded by the safety razor, but as a generational change like the move from wet shaving to electric razors. People accustomed to a cut throat razor didn't like safety razors because the blade couldn't be sharpened but had to be thrown away. They were accustomed to the blade being sharpened before every use.
