It is MFU Lore of the highest degree: Napoleon Solo had a wife before UNCLE, before Korea.  Or so it said in the synopsis written for the character who would turn into televisions biggest cassanova to date circa 1964.
Are there any references at all in the series to this history?  I don't know of them, but we do have some stories that flash back to that short-lived relationship.
And then there is Illya's wedding band, the uh-oh result of someone not reminding Mr. McCallum to remove the jewelry that would prove one of the most provocative elements in the series.
Stories?  I know of one or two that has a wife tucked away in the shadows.  One of them is by [livejournal.com profile] k1p2psso but I'm having trouble locating it.
So, anyone?

It seemed to me in the Mad,Mad Tea Party - when Kay is wondering about the fact that she almost said it was wonderful that she might miss her own wedding. Napoleon responds "Maybe it's just a case of last minute nerves, I think. Many people get that way just before getting married... I've been told" This might indicate that he had personal experience.

I recall one story about the wedding band which was very entertaining. It involved IK telling different people different stories about it when each one speculated about the ring. I wish i could recall it. It was different and fun.

I wrote a story for a picfic challenge that has Napoleon talking about his wife. The link takes you to AO3; the tale is only 750 words long.

My take was always that the writers substituted Clara for the idea of "dead wife", since widowers in the 1960s were depicted as rather staid fellows. So, to give the idea of losing a love not to death but rather to his dedication to his work, was a better fit for the character of Napoleon.

My take on Napoleon's supposed marriage is very different, and is chronicled in my story THE CINDERFELLA AFFAIR (http://carabele.com/uncle/Cinderfella.pdf).
