I'm so glad that we've heard from a good number of the community as responses to Roll Call have come in.  I invite everyone to check in with us, let us know how it's going as we collectively huddle against the onslaught of this virus.
I hope you'll embrace the possibility that what is evil to the core (possibly a THRUSH concoction, yet again), will not destroy us, and  that the shared love of our Men from UNCLE will fuel our hope and imaginations to see that good does overcome in real life as well as fiction.
If you haven't yet checked in, please let us hear from you.  We are a community, and that implies our care and concern for one another.  Although our purpose on Section VII has been as a writing site, please feel free to share here if you need to reach out or just ramble a little about life.  We'll repurpose in order to better serve the needs of the community.
I'm believing for the best, that in spite of the misery and heartache we've seen from Covid-19, there is hope that it will be eradicated. I don't hold to doom, and count the human spirit and the grace available to us as reason to look up and not be downcast or defeated.
Marian has informed me last night that one of her relatives has been diagnosed with the virus, and has possibly been exposed to it by her daughter, who is a nurse at one of the hospitals.  Please keep Frannie Lawlor in your prayers, held up in your most positive and generous thoughts. It's one thing to read the numbers and know that it is nearby, quite another to put a face to it from among your own friends and families.
If any of you have a similar connection, please let us know.  Those of us who pray will do so, and those who can generate the positive energies of faith and goodwill can add to our collective higher selves.
We're a community, we'll love and support one another.
Glenna

The lives of many of us are temporarily on hold, so how about a trip back to the Swinging 60s, and the adventures of our dashing heroes?

The prompts for stories due on 6th April can be found below the cut. For stories due today follow the link for the prompts.

https://section7mfu.livejournal.com/2774054.html

Don't forget, you can now chose to use one of the prompt words, or to use both in your story (not forgetting the colour element), remembering to state which combination of prompts you are using.

Remember, Section VII is a Gen site, but stories which are Het, Long-term Romance or AU can be posted in [livejournal.com profile] mfu_map_room

You can post directly to Section VII or, if you wish, you can post your story elsewhere and provide a link. Please say where the link leads as a lot of people are unwilling to go to certain sites. Don't forget, Section VII and the Map Room are both available on Dreamwidth, for those of you who can figure it out (Just let us know if you posted there).

Have fun.

-Prompt Word 1 - Witness

-Prompt Word 2 – Pace

-Prompt Colour – Gold

-Due Date – 6th April 2020

Challenge Rules

-Your story can be built around one or both of the prompt words plus the colour. I.E.- Word 1/Colour, Word 2/Colour, or Word 1/Word 2/Colour.

-Word Count - must be between 300 and 1000.

-All stories should be headed with ‘Short Affair’ Challenge, the due date and your title.

-Please state at the top of your post which prompt combination you are using.

-Tags - please use short_affair, gen or gen-mature.

-Section VII is a Gen community, so stories should be appropriate, i.e. nothing explicit or overly-graphic. However, there is the Gen-Mature tag for anything containing violence, torture or mild Het. The Map Room should be used for Het stories, but again, nothing overly graphic.

-Also, as a courtesy to others, please use the LJ Cut, so as not to take up all the room on someone’s feed. Remember, Section VII is a Gen site, but stories which are Het, Long-term Romance or AU can be posted in [livejournal.com profile] mfu_map_room

MONDAY, MARCH 30

Mummer

[mə-mər]Part of speech: noun

Origin: old french, 15th century

  • An actor in a traditional masked mime, especially of a type popular in England in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
  • A pantomimist.

Examples of Mummer in a sentence

  • Our trip to England included a theatrical performance by a traditional mummer.
  • The mummer performed on the corner every day, occasionally receiving donations from the crowd.

About Mummer

Mummer is thought to be a combination of the Old French verb “momer,” meaning to wear a mask, and the Middle English verb “mommen,” meaning to mutter or be silent. This gives us mummer, or one who practices the art of pantomime. Today you’ll typically find a mime wearing a full face of white paint instead of a mask.

Did you Know?

While pantomime plays featuring mummers as actors reached peak popularity in the 18th and early 19th centuries, some more modern mimes have also gained notoriety. Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp character was a breakout star in silent films. And perhaps the most famous mime, Marcel Marceau, charmed the world as Bip the Clown.

I think it's worthwhile to direct your attention to our Short Affair Challenge.  It's every Monday, 1000 words or less and entirely worth a look.  You can find it by using the short_affair tag below.

The grey walls of Headquarters were giving Napoleon Solo a headache.  Something about the sameness of it was playing havoc with his desire to do something, anything, that would take him outside of these walls.

Illya Kuryakin was watching his partner as the American fidgeted with a keychain that had appeared on his desk, much to the Russian’s annoyance.  Flipping it up into the air and catching it, clicking it against the desktop… it seemed that anything that might be considered irritating was in Napoleon’s repertoire of activities today.

Finally, after having endured as much of his partner’s boredom induced antics, Illya spoke up.

“Napoleon, why don’t you simply take a walk, go outside, anything other than sitting here with that confounded keychain.” His voice was even, not in the least betraying just how annoyed he truly was.  Napoleon was behaving as though he alone was enduring the current situation.

A look of something akin to sheepishness came on his face, a sudden realization that he wasn’t alone in the room.

“Oh, gee… I’m really sorry Illya.  I just got, ummm… well, I just go so bored that I forgot you were here.’ He saw Illya’s eyebrows raise up in protest; a silent but stringent disagreement perhaps.

“Honestly, I was just daydreaming.  Sorry about the, umm… ‘’ He held up the keychain and grinned.
