Origin: english, 14th century

  • To make a joke of something.

  • The children laugh and jape while they wait in the lunchline.

About Jape

Jape, as a verb, means to make a joke, but you can also use it as a noun. On April Fools' Day you might pull a jape, or a practical joke, on your family. May we suggest filling the bathroom with balloons overnight?

Did you Know?

Jape is an English word that doesn't have a clear etymology from a foreign or ancient language. Chaucer used it in the 14th century in the senses of both trickery and mockery. Then somehow it gained the meaning of sexual intercourse. Most writers stopped using it then for fear of misinterpretation, but jape is still used in literary or formal writing.

I think that distractions go a long way to helping us look past the current crisis the world is facing.  I am not given to the predictions of doom, I tend to keep a more optimistic outlook; I believe we'll see a vaccine and a cure. That's my platform and I'm sticking to it.

I do think the creative process is a good antidote to the gloom of those predictions we keep hearing, because the production of art and literature, whatever it is that qualifies as the creative process, is good for our attitude.  The ability of the human body to respond favorably to happy words and thoughts is scientifically proven, and I will add that before science found that our immune system gets fractured by worry and anxiety, one of the writers of the book of Proverbs wisely stated that a good attitude acted like a medicine for the body.  Or, as King James put it, a merry heart doeth good like a medicine.

Today, try drabbling.

One Hundred Words to confirm your commitment to not going down with the doomsayers is one way to bolster your optimism, which I hope you possess today.

We've been taking roll for several days, and the response has been terrific.  It's so good to hear from our cousins and know how things are going for all of us.  We'll continue to have Roll Call throughout this time of troubling headlines and fractured lives.

This isn't just a one time thing, Section VII is re-tooling just as many industries are doing.  We are a community, and so your posts can range from stories about MFU or your own personal accounts of how life is reflecting the current state of the world.

Roll Call is for our daily journal of living through this trying time, and hopefully the support and sharing will help us all carry on, and triumph over a very concerning episode in our lives.

The Comm is open, we want to hear from you.  If you haven't already read the comments being posted on the original Roll Call, find them HERE

You are invited to share your journey with the tag roll call.

It was unusual for Napoleon to be so despondent and Illya was worried. The American was the definition of optimism in the face of adversity.

“What has caused this downturn in your spirit?” the Russian asked.

Napoleon sighed and looked over to his partner.

“Do you ever feel like we’re fighting a losing battle?” he asked. “As soon as one issue is solved another arrives to threaten to world.”

“If I thought that, my friend, I would not try so hard to secure the safety of those we protect,” Illya replied. “If the best we can manage is to maintain the status quo then we are succeeding. Though I prefer to believe we make the world a much better place. I have witnessed the world at its worst and, no matter what comes along to threaten humanity, I will stand against it.”

Napoleon’s brow wrinkled in thought, and then a smile appeared on his handsome face, which was matched in his eyes.

“Thank you, Tovarisch,” he said warmly. “I can always count on you to put things into perspective. I guess I’m just tired.”

“Maybe you should sleep tonight, rather than meeting with a lady friend.”

“I’m not that tired.”
